Legendary Supermodel Iman has demanded for designers to start using more black models in their shows, and believes people should begin boycotting designer who don't use black models on their runway. She's taking a stand alongside Naomi Campbell and former model Bethan Hardison to question why the industry is still dominated by white models. They are currently campaigners for the Diversity Coalition, which seeks to create equality in the modelling industry.
At New York Fashion Week this year, just 6 percent of models walking in shows were black and shockingly 13 shows featured no models of colour at all. Iman believes fashion had more diversity when she first started out in the modelling world than there is now, and believes the lack of black models on the catwalk is a "racist" act. The former supermodel, now 58 sent a letter(along with Naomi and Bethann) to the governing bodies of each fashion capital highlighting the lack of racial equality, and how the problem is increasing. Last year, iconic milliner Philip Treacey took a leap in the right direction when he sent an all black cast down the runway for his Spring/Summer 13 show in a celebration of diversity.
Its crazy to think that this is still a problem being talked about, as its 2013 and we are living in a multicultural society! Model Jourdan Dunn said on the matter "London's not a white city,so why should our catwalks be white?!"… very true!
Below are some black models of today who are definitely proving that black is beautiful!
